ESG Corporate Gift Malaysia Case Study: Unseen Matters x Affin Bank SME BizChat 2026
What Sustainable Conference Gift Collection Did Unseen Matters Create for Affin Bank?

Unseen Matters designed a 4-piece royal-blue batik travel and work collection as an ESG corporate gift Malaysia brands can put their name behind, for Affin Bank’s SME BizChat 2026 – a batik laptop cover with extra compartment, an adjustable double-hook lanyard with extra compartment, a batik passport cover, and a batik luggage tag.
This project shows how a sustainable corporate gift in KL can be tailored around a specific business audience – in this case, SME leaders and entrepreneurs gathering for a financial resilience conference. Rather than treating “corporate gift” as a single category, the brief pushed our team to think about the full physical journey of a conference attendee: from the moment they collect their name badge, through a day of talks and networking, to the flight or drive home afterward. Each of the four pieces in the collection maps directly onto a different part of that journey, which is part of why the set reads as considered rather than assembled.
Why Did Affin Bank Need a Sustainable Custom Gift Collection?

AFFIN SME BizChat 2026, held on 8 July 2026, was built around the theme “Financial Resilience for SMEs in Today’s Economy,” bringing together SME owners and business leaders for insights and networking, alongside the AFFIN RAKANIAGA Bazaar.
For an event centred on resilience and growth for Malaysian businesses, Affin Bank wanted a sustainable conference event gift that reflected the same values they were championing on stage – practical, well-made, and rooted in local craftsmanship, rather than a generic branded giveaway. Financial resilience is, at its core, a conversation about long-term thinking: building something that holds up under pressure, rather than something that looks good for a single moment and fades quickly after. Affin Bank wanted their gifting to say the same thing without needing a tagline to explain it.
There was also a practical consideration. SME BizChat draws an audience of business owners, many of whom travel regularly for their own operations – to supplier meetings, regional expos, client visits. A gift that only worked inside a conference hall would have limited shelf life. Affin Bank needed something that would still be in active use a month, six months, a year after the event, quietly carrying their brand into rooms and situations well outside their own marketing calendar.
That’s where Unseen Matters came in.
Where Did the Design Inspiration Come From?

The collection’s deep royal-blue batik, layered with pink, teal, and gold floral motifs, was chosen to feel premium and distinctly Malaysian while still working comfortably in a corporate, banking-adjacent setting.
Financial services gifting can easily default to safe and forgettable – a plain navy pouch, a stock leather notebook, the kind of item that gets used once and forgotten in a drawer. Our team wanted the opposite: a palette bold enough to stand out on a conference floor, but refined enough to sit next to a tailored blazer without looking out of place. The floral batik pattern gave the collection warmth and identity, while the consistent navy-blue base kept every piece feeling like part of one considered set rather than four unrelated items.
Colour selection went through several rounds before settling on the final royal blue. Early options leaned either too dark, which risked the floral detailing getting lost, or too bright, which felt closer to leisurewear than corporate gifting. The final shade needed to do two things at once: photograph well under the stage lighting and branding backdrops typical of a conference like BizChat, and hold its own visual weight next to Affin Bank’s own brand blue, so the collection felt aligned with the bank’s identity rather than competing with it.
The floral motifs themselves – pink, teal, and gold worked into the batik pattern – were chosen to soften what could otherwise have been a very corporate, very blue collection. Batik as a craft carries centuries of regional history, and part of the brief internally was making sure that heritage didn’t get flattened into decoration. The floral arrangement was placed deliberately across each product, denser in areas that would be most visible when the item was in use, and quieter across structural or high-wear areas, so the pattern held up visually over time rather than fraying or fading unevenly.
What Was Included in the Affin Bank Sustainable Conference Gift Collection?

The collection included a batik laptop cover with an extra compartment, a batik adjustable double-hook lanyard with extra compartment, a batik passport cover, and a batik luggage tag – all in matching royal-blue batik.

Batik Laptop Cover with Extra Compartment
Designed for SME leaders on the move, this cover holds a laptop alongside an additional compartment for cables, cards, or documents – built for daily use well beyond BizChat 2026 itself. The extra compartment was a deliberate addition rather than a default feature; in early concept discussions, the team recognised that most SME leaders don’t travel with just a laptop. They’re carrying chargers, business cards, a notebook, sometimes a second device. A single-pocket sleeve would have looked good in product photography but failed the actual use case within a week. The compartment solves that without adding bulk, sitting flush against the main body of the cover so the whole piece still slides easily into a bag or under an arm.
Batik Adjustable Strap Double-Hook Lanyard with Extra Compartment
A functional upgrade on the standard conference lanyard: an adjustable double-hook strap paired with a small extra compartment, giving attendees somewhere to tuck a card or key without needing a separate pouch. Conference lanyards are typically the most disposable item in any gifting set – worn for a single day, then discarded before the attendee leaves the building. Building in genuine functionality, an adjustable strap that can be resized for comfort, a double hook for securing both a badge and a secondary item, and a small storage compartment, was intended to change that math. If the lanyard is actually useful outside the conference hall, for a work ID at the office, for a key on a keychain loop, it survives the trip home instead of ending up in a hotel bin.

Batik Passport Cover & Batik Luggage Tag
A travel-ready piece for SME leaders who are frequently on the move for business, wrapping travel documents in the same signature batik pattern as the rest of the set. The passport cover was one of the more technically fiddly pieces to get right, since passport dimensions leave very little margin for error – too loose and the passport slides out during handling at immigration counters, too tight and it becomes awkward to remove quickly. The final construction uses a snug internal lining with just enough give to allow one-handed removal, tested specifically with the kind of quick in-and-out handling that airport queues demand.
Finishing the travel pairing, a matching luggage tag designed to hold contact details securely while keeping the whole collection visually consistent from desk to departure gate. Luggage tags are small, but they’re also one of the most visible pieces of branded merchandise in the entire travel process, hanging from checked baggage across multiple airports and handling points. Making sure the batik pattern and clasp hardware could survive rough handling on a baggage carousel was a genuine design constraint, not an afterthought.
Together, the four pieces moved fluidly from conference floor to business trip, reinforcing Affin Bank’s presence at every touchpoint an SME leader might carry it into. An attendee could wear the lanyard through the BizChat sessions, carry the laptop cover into their next client meeting the following week, and travel with the passport cover and luggage tag on their next business trip; three completely different contexts, one consistent visual identity.
How Was the Batik Pattern Adapted for a Banking Audience?

Our artisans balanced a rich, decorative floral batik motif against a solid navy-blue base, keeping the collection expressive without compromising the polished, professional tone Affin Bank needed.
Getting this balance right took a few rounds of pattern placement testing. Too much floral density across a laptop cover risks looking busy in a boardroom; too little, and the craftsmanship gets lost. The final pattern concentrates detail where it’s most visible – the front panel and lanyard strap – while keeping structural areas clean, so each piece reads as considered rather than decorative for its own sake.
There’s also a practical dimension to pattern placement that isn’t always obvious from finished product photography: high-contact areas need different treatment than display areas. The underside of the laptop cover, for instance, sees far more friction and handling than the front panel, so the batik application there was adjusted to hold up under repeated contact without the pattern wearing thin or the dye transferring. Similarly, the lanyard strap, which gets pulled, twisted, and handled constantly throughout a full conference day, needed reinforced dye application at the fold points where fabric stress concentrates.
Working across four very different product types with the same base pattern also meant solving for scale. A floral motif that reads beautifully across a laptop cover’s larger surface area can look cramped or lose definition when shrunk down to fit a luggage tag. Rather than simply scaling the same artwork down uniformly, our artisans adjusted motif density and spacing per product, so the pattern felt intentional at every size rather than looking like an afterthought squeezed onto the smaller pieces.
How Did Unseen Matters Deliver Ahead of the BizChat 2026 Deadline?

Production was scheduled backward from the 8 July 2026 event date, covering batik sourcing, cutting, stitching, and quality checks across all four product types before final packing and delivery to Affin Bank.
Coordinating four distinct product types – each with different construction needs, from the laptop cover’s reinforced compartment to the lanyard’s adjustable double-hook hardware – meant running production in parallel rather than sequentially, to keep the full collection on track for the event. Sequential production, finishing one product type fully before starting the next, would have been the safer, simpler path operationally, but it wasn’t realistic given the timeline. Instead, our team split the workflow across specialised stations: fabric preparation and dye-matching running first across all four products simultaneously, followed by parallel cutting and construction lines, before everything converged for a final combined quality check.
Quality control across a multi-product set also has to account for consistency between pieces, not just quality within a single item. A batch of laptop covers passing inspection individually doesn’t guarantee the full four-piece set looks cohesive together; colour can drift slightly between production runs, especially with hand-dyed batik. Our team ran side-by-side comparisons across all four product types before finalising any batch, catching and correcting shade inconsistencies before they reached packing.
Packing itself was handled with the end recipient in mind rather than just efficient shipping. Since these were being distributed as a set to attendees at a specific event, presentation mattered as much as the contents. Each collection was packed to arrive intact and ready for immediate handout on-site, with enough buffer built into the delivery schedule to absorb any last-minute logistics issues without threatening the 8 July event date.
What Was the Outcome of the Affin Bank Gift Collection Project?

Affin Bank walked away with a cohesive, on-brand gifting collection that reinforced the SME BizChat 2026 theme of resilience and quality, giving attendees something they’d actually use long after the event.
Beyond the individual pieces, the collection worked as a set – attendees wearing the lanyard on the conference floor, then carrying the same batik pattern through their laptop bag and travel documents afterward. For Affin Bank, it meant a gifting moment that stayed visible well past the closing session. Every time an attendee opens their laptop in a client meeting, or pulls out their passport at check-in, the collection quietly extends Affin Bank’s presence into contexts the bank would otherwise have no reach into.
For Unseen Matters, it reinforced how a single cohesive design language, applied consistently across genuinely different product types, can turn a multi-item corporate gift set into something delegates genuinely want to keep using rather than something that gets sorted into a drawer. The project also underscored a broader principle in sustainable corporate gifting: durability and cultural craftsmanship aren’t just ethical or aesthetic choices, they’re functional ones. A gift that’s built to last, and carries a story worth keeping, earns its place in someone’s daily rotation in a way that disposable branded merchandise never can.
